What is the Duty of Candour?

The Duty of Candour is a rule that makes sure health and care services are honest and open with you if something goes wrong with your treatment.

This means that if an unexpected mistake or problem happens that causes harm, or could have caused harm,

the service must:

  • Tell you what happened

  • Say sorry

  • Explain what they will do to help put things right

  • Let you know what changes they’ll make so it doesn’t happen again

It is about making sure you are treated with respect, honesty, and transparency, and that the service learns from mistakes to keep you safe.
